Researchers from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory estimate that there are 2,600,000 metric tons of lithium available in the geothermal reservoir below Imperial County.<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>That\u2019s enough to power between 300,000,000\u2014600,000,000 electric vehicles.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"comp-m3vgxpqe\" class=\"Z_l5lU ku3DBC zQ9jDz qvSjx3 Vq6kJx comp-m3vgxpqe wixui-rich-text\" data-testid=\"richTextElement\">\n<p class=\"font_7 wixui-rich-text__text\"><span class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\">Three companies are planning to extract lithium in Imperial County.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\">These developments could bring high-paying jobs and economic opportunities to Imperial County residents. But they will also bring environmental risks and there is no guarantee that future jobs will be good jobs or accessible to our residents.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"x-text x-content e2-e32 m2-4b m2-4c m2-4d m2-4e\"><p class=\"font_2 wixui-rich-text__text\"><em><span class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\">That is why Valle Unido por Beneficios Comunitarios is coming together to\u00a0<strong>unite Imperial County residents behind a platform of good jobs\u00a0<span class=\"color_44 wixui-rich-text__text\">and\u00a0<\/span>environmental protections. These plants produce a total of 345 megawatts of power (an average of 34.5 megawatts each), which is enough to power approximately 300,000 homes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"><span class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\">The company is currently seeking permits from the California Energy Commission (CEC) to build three new geothermal power plants in the area. These power plants will produce a total of 401 megawatts of power, meaning they will more-than-double the company\u2019s existing production capacity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"><span class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\">BHER is developing technology to extract lithium from its power plants. The proposed facility will generate 50 megawatts of geothermal power and deliver 25,000 metric tons of lithium per year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"><span class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\">The company won approval of its project from the Imperial County Board of Supervisors in December of 2023 but the project has subsequently been delayed due to a lawsuit over the adequacy of its environmental review.
